Why Purchase the 1510A Signal Generator?

Application #1 | Calibration

MTI’s 1510A signal generator can be used to calibrate monitoring systems, charge amplifiers, machinery balancing systems and avionics equipment. This microprocessor-controlled device is also used for correlating new equipment, such as engine test cells, to a traceable standard.

The 1510A can produce several types of waveshapes and calibrate all types of instruments and sensors. Examples include:

  • accelerometers
  • pressure transducers
  • microphones
  • speed sensors
  • temperature thermocouples
  • strain gauges
  • EKG/EEG sensors
  • Eddy current probes

With monitoring systems, the MTI 1510A can simulate sensor-originated electrical signals to confirm that these systems are responding as expected. Often, monitoring systems require calibration after installation to account for losses caused by cabling and environmental factors. The various input types for these systems also require periodic calibration to ensure safe equipment operation.
For charge amplifiers, MTI’s 1510A precision signal generator has a charge output for measuring variations in gain and frequency response. Most signal generators don’t have a charge output – and those that do may lack the precision and frequency range needed for full charge amplifier testing. By contrast, the 1510A was designed specifically for this task.

Application #2 | Portable Use

Because the MTI 1510A is battery operated, hand-hold and portable, crews can bring the signal generator to instruments or power generation equipment instead of instruments or equipment to the signal generator. In-situ calibrations reduces downtime, helping to make maintenance easier thereby cutting costs. Specific applications include monitoring and data acquisition equipment at power plants, manufacturing facilities, mines, flight-line, on-board an aircraft, and medical laboratories.

The 1510A’s portability also means there’s no connection to ground. This eliminates ground loops, current flows through the ground conductor that occur when the ground voltage potential in one location is different from another. Another advantage of MTI’s 1510A is that the device won’t contribute to industrial “noise” that can distort signals. Other types of AC-powered equipment may introduce noise at the AC power source frequency.

Application #3 | Simulation

The 1510A can simulate sensors, transducers, signals and vibrations. Importantly, it can simulate accelerometer sensor signals – including piezoelectric devices and single and differential charge-mode devices. MTI’s signal generator can also simulate audio signals in frequencies from 20 Hz to 20 KHz and is so precise that it’s used to match specific musical notes for testing audio equipment. For simulating velocity transducers, the 1510A can produce periodic outputs signals in the millivolt range.

MTI’s 1510A can be used to simulate machinery speed signals as sinusoidal waves, square waves, or pulse trains. This portable, handheld signal generator can produce nearly all types of speed signals for simulating speed pickup transducers, too. Moreover, the 1510A precision signal generator can simulate the low-level voltages (1 microvolt to 100 microvolts) used in bridge-type sensor instrumentation.

Application #4 | Testing and Troubleshooting

MTI’s 1510A precision signal generator is a great choice for testing, troubleshooting, and diagnosing problems with instruments and power generation equipment. Examples of testing activities include:

  • electronics testing
  • automated testing
  • data acquisition system testing
  • rotating turbine testing

With electronics testing, the 1510A is versatile enough to simulate the various input and output charges, voltages, and frequency signals associated with sensitive electronic equipment. With automated system testing, the signal generator’s sweep and job functions help save time when testing multiple input values and frequency responses.

In regards to diagnosing properly functioning sensors, by removing a sensor from a faulty system and instead using the 1510A to simulate that sensor, you are able to “prove out” the rest of the system, thus implicating the sensor as the faulty component.
Finally, the 1510A can be used to test signal continuity and integrity during cable and wire troubleshooting. By injecting a known signal into wiring, the signal generator allows measurement equipment to characterize capacitive and inductive loading introduced by cable lengths, proximity to other conductive objects, and partially damaged cables and connectors.
